Pierluisi Participates in Reforestation and Environmental Education Event in Fajardo

Fajardo, Puerto Rico—Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi joined Fajardo Mayor Aníbal Melendez, employees of the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), and a group of dedicated young people today to participate in their reforestation efforts in the Municipality of Fajardo. This activity is a part of the Sembrando Tu Ambiente (“Planting Your Environment”) program.

Today participants planted 60 trees on the grounds of Monte Brisas Sports Complex in Fajardo.

“I really enjoy participating in this type of project. I congratulate the Mayor for this tremendous initiative and hope it serves as a model for other municipalities. It is absolutely necessary to have more programs like this one with the aim of expanding awareness of the importance of protecting our environment, promoting respect for nature, and appreciating the beauty of our Island’s natural resources. It is important to instill in our Island’s future leaders a desire to make a positive change,” said Pierluisi.

Sembrando Tu Ambiente is a program focused on the reforestation of green areas, and includes a public education component. Through the program, communities in Fajardo are educated about the importance of preventing and reducing pollution, which will help to improve the environment and residents’ quality of life.

Recently, the program also reforested the green areas of the Deportivo Hipólito Robles Complex in Fajardo with 50 new trees.

In additon, the new Seven Seas Park in Fajardo—a $1 million project supported by Governor Luis Fortuño—brings more opportunity for Sembrando Tu Ambiente to expand environmental education and tree-planting in the Municipality. The new park includes a walking track, a go-kart track, volleyball courts and soccer fields, exercise stations for adults and children play areas, an area for rappelling and climbing, and a water park.
